DEATH AT THE DREAD DRAGON INN

Hello! You might be wondering what this is, and why you’ve been sent here!
You’ve been invited to attend a Murder Mystery event, where you’ll be required to use your wits and puzzle-cracking prowess to solve a murder!
Here’s everything you need to know.

SYNOPSIS

Long has it weighed on your mind the growing darkness you feel lengthening its shadowy reach over the lands of Estrea, and long have you witnessed the fell beasts and corrupted denizens of this world rising in power and number, their unquenchable thirst for destruction extending from the wind-swept hills of Athaica to the boggy swamps of the Troal Blesh. Yet you, great hero, have always answered the call to adventure. Some quests have threatened your very existence, taking you to the brink of death, but you’ve always managed to succeed in your dauntless pursuits. After your most recent campaign, you return home in hopes of a well-deserved rest and a taste of something less dangerous. As if the great Estrean deities themselves were at your beck and call, a most pleasant letter from an old acquaintance is delivered to you via the local adventuring guild:

My most dear and favorable friend,

I, Auberon Greatstag of Breinor, do humbly invite you to attend the celebration of my 60th birthday this next great moon at the Dread Dragon Inn, a most remarkable establishment of my own humble founding.

Festivities will abound, and merriment will be had by all!

I do hope you’ll attend, old friend.
With warmest regards,
Auberon

Auberon Greatstag, you remember him well as a mighty warrior, having joined him on one of his famous expeditions early on in your adventuring career. How good of him to remember you. You’ve also heard tale of the famous Dread Dragon Inn which Auberon opened shortly after his retirement, a reflection of his past life as an adventurer, full of various treasures and artifacts he collected over his many years, and punctuated by the large hanging skull of Nymmut the Dreadful, a menacing black dragon slain by Auberon’s own fearsome blade in his final great quest.

A celebration is just the thing you need to help kick back and relax! You RSVP at once, and set your sights on the glorious and unforgettable night that lies ahead in Breinor.

CHOOSING YOUR CHARACTER

To play, you’ll need to decide on a “character type” that will define what information you’re given during the event.
For this scenario, there are four character types to choose from. Select one below to learn more about it!

Fighters possess an unmatched expertise in weaponry and armor, accompanied by a comprehensive understanding of combat techniques. They are intimately familiar with death, adept at dealing it out as well as fearlessly confronting it head-on. Humans, Dwarves, Dragon-kin and Half-orcs all make great fighters, due to their high strength and constitution.

Wizards stand as eminent wielders of magic, distinguished and unified by their spellcasting abilities. Tapping into the intricate fabric of magic that pervades the universe, wizards unleash spells of fiery explosions, crackling lightning, cunning illusions, and an array of other mystical forces. Humans, Elves, Gnomes, and Half-Elves all make great wizards due to their high intelligence and wisdom.

Warriors of the wilderness, rangers specialize in hunting the monsters that threaten the edges of civilization— humanoid raiders, rampaging beasts and monstrosities, terrible giants, and even deadly dragons. Armed with both combat weapons and spells, rangers are a powerful part of any adventuring party. Humans, Elves, Halflings, and Half-elves all make great Rangers due to their high dexterity and wisdom.

Rogues place their trust in expertise, stealth, and exploiting their adversaries’ weaknesses to gain the advantage in any circumstance. They possess an innate ability to solve a wide range of challenges, showcasing resourcefulness and adaptability that form the foundation of a triumphing adventuring group. Halflings, Half-elves, Gnomes, and Dark Elves all make great rogues due to their high dexterity and intelligence.

You get to decide the personality, the quirks, the motives, and the backstory for your character!
In addition, because this mystery takes place in a fantasy realm, you also get to choose a race for your character. It won’t effect the gameplay, but choosing a race will give you the chance to have some fun with your character.

Some common fantasy races include:

Humans
Dwarves

Elves
Half-elves
Gnomes
Halflings
and Half-orcs

But feel free to find your own!

Will you be a Dwarven Fighter answering the call to adventure?
A Human Wizard out to prove yourself?
An Elven Ranger with a keen eye for truth?
Or maybe a sneaky Halfling Rogue with a penchant for trickery?
It’s all up to you!

NOTE: To play, there must be at least one of each type of character, so let the host know quickly which type you’d prefer!
There may be more than one of each type, i.e. there can be a Wizard who is famous for their might and magic right next to a Wizard who’s more of a magician than a Merlin, but there must be at least one of each type to complete the murder mystery.

Have fun choosing your character and deciding what their name is, what sort of creature they are, how they knew Auberon and how they might interact with the others!
Just remember to let your Host know as soon as possible to lock in your choice!

WHAT TO BRING

To play, you’ll need a smartphone.
Why?
The world in which you’ll be a part of in this Murder Mystery will be shaped by various QR codes that you’ll need to scan in order to collect information, solve puzzles, and decipher clues!

Most smartphones can scan QR codes simply by pointing at them with your Camera App, but if your phone’s camera doesn’t have that function, you can download one of the many free QR Scanning apps available.

A notebook or some scrap paper with something to write with will definitely come in handy as well.

Other than that, just bring yourself!
Everyone is encouraged to dress the part, and feel free to bring along any props you have that might go well with your character.
