A glint of gold catches your eye, and your gaze falls on a well-worn deck of Starfall Cards. Fortune-telling is a con’s game, right? Surely there’s no way to predict the future. Yet, this particular deck has seen a lot of use, the golden edges going soft with wear. You reach for the cards, but hesitate with a glance around the room. Will your companions see this as a silly superstition? Would they take to heart whatever card you turn over? Do you even take this seriously?
In your hand is the Deliverance card. The glittering gold of the scrollwork key grabs your attention, ready to unlock the cage below. It’s inspiring, at first. The longer you look at it though, you can’t help but think that maybe the key isn’t freeing, but restricting. Perhaps it isn’t there to allow access to the gilt cage below, but to trap one within it. For all the opportunity the key offers, it’s bound inextricably to the captivity of the cage. All excitement has bled from the card in your hand. Instead, it’s a reminder that you are confined here to the Dread Dragon Inn this night, with a murderer no less. You drop the card back atop the deck, wishing you’d never given in to the curiosity.
