A glint of gold catches your eye, and your gaze falls on a well-worn deck of Starfall Cards. Do fortune-telling cards like these really contain the ability to predict the future, or are they merely the tools of a trickster’s trade? This particular deck has seen a lot of use, the golden edges going soft with wear. You reach for the cards, but hesitate with a glance around the room. Will your companions see this as a silly superstition? Would they take to heart whatever card you turn over? Do you even take this seriously?
In your hand is the Verdancy card. It implies growth, expansion, and a time of plenty. Its soft colors, sweeping blossoms, and lush greenery are reassuring, at first. The longer you look at it though, you can’t help but to note the strange twisting of the branches and trunk, how the tree seems to be blooming with just as many shadows as flowers, and the sickly tone of the colors. All comfort has bled from the card in your hand, instead it’s a reminder of the twisting darkness in the Dread Dragon Inn this night. You drop the card back atop the deck, yet you can still feel the presence of some discomforting energy on your fingertips, as if the cards were coated in the sickly sap of a cursed elder tree.
